Lying on the edge of the city centre and behind the V&A Waterfront, at the same main road as the Sea Point but a little closer to the city, the precinct hosted many athletic and other sporting events, which include horse racing. Presented and in upgrade is the Green point; a sports precinct in which 2010 Fifa World Cup stadium is being built.

The stadium currently going in alliance with the name Green Point is capacitated at 70 000 seats which will be reduced to 55 000 post World Cup tournament; this is a record of decision taken for environmental impacts. The capacity arrangement is in the following manner.

o 55 seats are permanent and have been allowed 36 613 general spectator seats to upper and lower bowl, 14 910 to middle bowl, 2. 035 box seats, 1690 business club/ restaurant seats and 178 seats for media with 24 media desks.

o 13 000 seats of which circa 7 000 are located on permanent concrete seating tier and the remaining circa 6 000 seats are supported on temporary platform.

o 15 000 will be re-used in the de-construction of the existing Green Point Stadium and other social investment opportunities.

The actual estimated cost for the building was budgeted at about R2, 857-billion but due to economic environmental impacts; the cost have escalated to approximately an estimated R4-billion. This is how the funding is broken down:
o City of Cape Town’s contribution amounts to R400-million plus R100-million contingency funding.
o The provincial government’s contribution amounts to R212-billion.

Despite the escalation in costs the process of construction and refurbishment of the areas was scheduled to begin as of 26 March 2007 for completion by December 2009 and this is taking considerable pace and is also very well on track as planned.

Some Details of the Design Concept:

The design is functional and contains only required accommodation.

The following design principles relates to the stadium

o Adherence to technical and feasibility standards
o Financial sustainability
o Environmental sustainability
o Social integration
o Economic development.
The location on the Green Point Common design approach is sensitive to its environment and addresses factors beyond the provisions for a FIFA World Cup compliant stadium.
